TTT: Books I Enjoyed That Are Outside of My Comfort Zone

These are books that are/used to be outside my cushy genres that I know and love, i.e. historical fiction, dystopians, contemporary romances, cozy mysteries. A lot of these I read in classes and was given the assignment to read a book in a specific genre or off a reading list, others were ones that I picked up on my own but was very skeptical about them. I’m trying to be more open-minded with my book choices, because as always, books can surprise you.

Books outside my comfort zone:

  • Written In-Verse, And We Stay
  • Graphic Novels, El Deafo
  • Short Stories, One More Thing
  • LGBT Protagonist, Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda
  • Horror, Unbreakable
  • Difficult Subject Matter, Unwind
  • Travel Biography, Wild
  • Western Romance, Second Chance Ranch
  • Biographies, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?
  • Psychological Thrillers, Gone Girl

I’ve got the Unwind series, but haven’t read it yet. It looks so good, but also super creepy (and honestly, I bought it only because I love Neal Shusterman’s newer work and will now read anything by him). Glad you enjoyed it, though! Gone Girl is also on my TBR. :3

    Here’s my TTT post.

Me too!! I keep meaning to get back to it, I had a friend that’s read them all and said they got even better! It’s just so eerie and interesting and so creepy, but I loved it!!

I wanted SO MUCH to like B.J. Novak’s book, but it was just too literary/hard to parse and simultaneously laden with cursing to get very far. I then rented the audiobook from the library and listened to the tracks read by or with his Office castmates, but even those I think I enjoyed more because of the voices than the content. (Good to see that you liked Mindy’s book!)

And now to further lower my literary credit, I will say that I can pop Western romances like potato chips. Cowboys + horses are the recipe for a dependable book snack. Will have to check this one out.

WAIT. The audiobook has sections with his Office Castmates?! I need this ASAP. Some of the stories I liked more than others, but I really like his style, but it’s definitely an acquired taste. I LOVED Mindy’s books, she’s so witty and entertaining! And I loved her Office notes, and her friendship with BJ. 😍

YES. You definitely need to pick up the Second Chance Ranch series. They are super adorable easy romances and make you feel good. I definitely see the appeal! Cowboys in anything, I’m down! You’ll have to let me know your favorites, because they are addictive and I love them!!
